Lara Dreyer Named Wayne Way Volunteer Award Recipient

15 Years of Mentoring, Patience, and a Love of Reading

When Lara Dreyer attended Bridgeport Elementary's Back-to-School night in 2011, she decided to become a HOSTS mentor. Fifteen years later, she's still showing up.

Over the past decade and a half, Lara has mentored over 50 students in the HOSTS program, helping them discover the joy of reading one conversation at a time.

"She is so patient and kind with her students and truly gets them engaged in their text each and every time she comes to HOSTS," says Lisa Burdine, HOSTS instructor at Bridgeport Elementary, who nominated Lara for this month's Wayne Way Volunteer Award.

What makes Lara's impact so meaningful is her creativity and care. One moment stands out to Burdine: Lara's student was reading an article about fingerprints. Rather than simply discussing the text, Lara took time to show her student their very own fingerprint using a pencil rubbing on paper.

That simple, thoughtful gesture made such an impression that the student talked about the experience all week long.

"That's what Lara does," Burdine explains. "She brings the text to life for students."

Beyond her weekly mentoring, Lara has donated countless books to Burdine's classroom, ensuring students have access to stories that spark their curiosity and engagement.

This month, Lara Dreyer was recognized as a recipient of the Wayne Way Volunteer Award for her exceptional commitment, positive impact on students, and reliability as a mentor and leader.

"For 15 years of patience, kindness, and unwavering commitment to our students and their love of reading—thank you, Lara," said Superintendent Dr. Shenia Suggs at the August Board of Education meeting.

The Wayne Way Volunteer Award recognizes volunteers in Wayne Township Schools who demonstrate exceptional commitment, positive impact on students, school and community support, reliability and leadership, and embodiment of district values. Nominations are accepted monthly. Learn more.
